New Final Fantasy Resonance Trailer Boasts a “New Age of Pixel Art”

Big words, Square Enix, big words. But that won’t stop me from getting excited. Square Enix has just dropped a new trailer for Final Fantasy Resonance, a new HD-2D project that got announced last month at Summer Game Fest.

You can check out the trailer for yourself down below:

To my understanding, Final Fantasy Resonance is a retelling of the story of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which was released for mobile then discontinued after some years of service. I’m not that familiar with Brave Exvius myself despite being a bit of a gacha fiend; I was always more of a Mobius Final Fantasy fan, and of course, I played a ton of War of the Visions too. Now if those games get turned into proper console games, I’m here. Though I’m not so sure about War of the Visions. I don’t think people really play that one for the story if I’m being honest.

Anyway, the new trailer shows off more of the pixel art, the towns, and the combat. It all looks pretty decent, but once again, I’m still not convinced that the font they’ve chosen for the game is the best one. To me, it reminds me a lot of the pixel remasters of the classic Final Fantasy games, where the fonts just don’t mesh well with the overall fantasy vibe. It’s very readable, sure, but what about the vibes, y’know? The vibes? I’m also not a fan of how polished the character models look compared to the more pixelated environments. I don’t know. I’m excited to play this game, but there’s something about the aesthetic that’s just clashing to me. It simply doesn’t look quite as clean as Octopath Traveler or the recently released The Adventures of Elliot.

Could just be me though, and maybe it’ll be a non-issue once I actually get my hands on the game itself.

Final Fantasy Resonance is set to be released for PC and consoles on Oct. 22.
