Dedicated to delivering sharp, incisive takes on all things gaming and entertainment.

Retcon was founded by me, Zhiqing Wan, in April 2025. I began my foray into video games journalism back in 2014, starting out as a freelancer at Twinfinite and became the site’s Reviews Editor in 2016. I then went on to write for The Escapist and Destructoid in 2024 and 2025, before departing the network to start my own project.

After spending a decade writing for various publications, I have decided that I'm no longer interested in writing for outlets and sites I have no control over, and thus, Retcon was born. I am dedicated to delivering gaming and entertainment-related news and reviews. More importantly, I believe in dissecting the media we consume, identifying literary themes, and discussing them.

  • Reviews: Sharp critiques with a clear scoring rubric. Featured on Metacritic.
  • Interviews: Sometimes I get to talk to people smarter than me.
  • Op-eds: The hottest (and coldest) takes on the internet.
  • Columns: For the unhinged pitches no other outlet wants to run.
  • 100% Human-Made: No AI nonsense to be found here.
Why Retcon?
01
Retcon was founded as a response to the limitations often found in traditional, corporate-backed publications where editorial direction can be shaped by those with little understanding of gaming culture or the needs of a genuine readership.
The mission statement
02
My mission is to create a space where we can freely explore the limitless possibilities of games and media, driven by curiosity and passion rather than external business interests. In a way, Retcon is also an opportunity for me to rewrite a bit of my own story. I humbly invite you to join me on this journey, and I hope you enjoy your time here.
What makes Retcon different?
03
Retcon is, by and large, a one-woman show. While this means that you won't find breaking news or a broad range of infinite topics here, what you are getting is a highly curated enthusiast media outlet with quality articles that were carefully crafted.
Who writes for Retcon?
04
For the most part, it's just me, Zhiqing. I do occasionally have contributors, including writers I've worked with before. At present, you'll find words from Ethan Anderson, who's written for IGN and Gamespot among others, and my own sister Xiao Qing, who's currently a lifestyle writer based in Vancouver. I pay them out of pocket.
What does Retcon cover?
05
Essentially, anything that I'm personally invested in in the world of games and entertainment. I want the content that I put out into the world to be well thought out, so you won't find me dabbling in topics I have no interest or knowledge in, unless it's something I'm actively pursuing as a new area of coverage.
How can I support Retcon?
06
Oh hey, glad you asked! As you can see, I don't run ads or sponsorships on Retcon. This is a fully self-funded passion project that I'm paying out of pocket for while I work my actual full-time job, but if you'd like to show some love, you can do so on the Retcon Ko-Fi page, or click the Support Me button on the bottom left corner of your screen.
Eventually, I hope to launch a Patreon for Retcon with proper membership tiers and exclusive content for members. This will largely include early access to videos on the YouTube channel, and voting rights on what I should cover next as a playthrough series or for my Fieldnotes column.
