Pluribus thoroughly impressed me with its debut season and I, like many others, am getting extremely antsy waiting for a second season. Well, here’s a Pluribus Season 2 update. And for once, things are actually starting to sound pretty promising.
In an interview with Deadline, creator Vince Gilligan stated that the writers are “about a little past the halfway point” in relation to writing the script for Pluribus Season 2. “My writers and I have figured out the episodes, and it always — every season on every show — starts out hard. And then you just stay with it long enough,” says Gilligan, “I’m starting to get to the point where I’m thinking, I’m looking forward to shooting this, and people seeing it, because I’m kind of digging it.”
Gilligan also drops a little tidbit about the atom bomb that served as the centerpiece of the explosive Season 1 finale: “We’re thinking we’ll learn more about the atom bomb instead of just dropping it completely as a plot point.” He’s half kidding here as he jokes that Rhea Seehorn (who plays protagonist Carol Sturka) will indeed be in Season 2, but considering that viewers have raised the concern that Gilligan and the writers haven’t figured out what to do with the atom bomb (recall the machine gun from Breaking Bad Season 5’s first episode), it’s nice to at least get confirmation that Gilligan has some sort of plan for it.
The rest of the interview is worth checking out too, as Gilligan and Seehorn talk about their favorite moments from Season 1, their shooting rituals, Carol’s characterization, and more. Notably, the interviewer mentions being able to relate to the “curmudgeonly aspects of Carol” and Seehorn responds: “Oh good! Occasionally, people ask me why I’m not perkier, and I’m like, what if your wife was killed?!” Which I loved. I adore angry Carol. Never change.
Rumor has it that Season 2 could begin shooting this fall, which sounds plausible, especially if the writers are making good progress with the script. Season 1 is also up for this year’s Emmy race, with plenty of nominations across most of the Drama categories.
Pluribus is now available for streaming on Apple TV.
