Chie Satonaka is one of the core parts of Persona 4 that gets introduced to the player very early on. She and Yosuke are the first party members that join you, so of course it was important that Atlus got their voices and characterization right. With Chie, however, things got complicated pretty quickly. Across the original game, Golden, and now Persona 4 Revival, she’s had three different English voice actors.
For Persona 4 Revival, Chie will be voiced by Anne Yatco in English, while Yui Horie will reprise her role as the Japanese VA. You can check out the new trailer below showing off Chie in action:
For the longest time, I had such a strong love-hate relationship with Chie. Voiced by Tracey Rooney in the original PS2 version of the game, I always felt Chie’s voice was way too calm and mature for such an energetic character. I grew to love Rooney’s performance though, and appreciated that she lent a more grounded perspective to the group. Then, Erin Fitzgerald replaced Rooney in Persona 4 Golden, and she delivered a completely different performance as Chie.
Fitzgerald was more the voice I had in mind for Chie: loud, a little bit whiny, and somewhat immature. Going from Rooney to Fitzgerald was a tough adjustment for me personally, but I eventually grew to appreciate Fitzgerald’s take on the character too. And since then, she’s been the definitive voice for Chie for me.
And now, with Persona 4 Revival, Atlus has replaced Chie’s English VA yet again! Goddammit Atlus! I don’t know who Chie is anymore! I’m so confused! You’ve changed her voice every single time! Who is she?!
And yet, weirdly enough, Anne Yatco may actually end up being the best balance between Fitzgerald’s boisterous performance and Rooney’s more mature take on the character. From the sizzle reel, Yatco delivers a performance that still has a lot of energy, but she also reins it in quite a bit in more serious scenes. Not too much, not too little. She just might end up being the best fit for Chie at the end of the day. This isn’t to say that I won’t require a whole ton of time getting used to her performance, but hey, it’s something.
Maybe this is my cue to finally just give the Japanese voices a shot, though.
Persona 4 Revival is set to be released for PC and consoles on Feb. 18, 2027.
