It truly is adaptations season. Kinetic Games and Blumhouse have just announced that a Phasmophobia film adaptation is currently in the works. Blumhouse is known for producing other hit horror movies like M3GAN, The Black Phone, The Conjuring, and even the Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation.
Kinetic Games director and Phasmophobia lead director Daniel Knight stated: “We’re thrilled to officially announce that a Phasmophobia film adaption is in development – it’s a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting. We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we’re so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact Phasmophobia has had in the gaming space and beyond. Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can’t wait to share more as the project develops.”
Phasmophobia released via Steam Early Access back in 2020, and quickly proved to be a huge hit during the COVID-19 era. Players could team up and explore haunted houses to try to identify what sort of ghost was haunting it. To do that, you’d have to make use of a variety of cool ghostbusting gadgets. Though, really, this game is more of like a setup simulator of what happens before the actual ghostbusters arrive.
Phasmophobia has remained a popular Steam horror game since then, with plenty of updates coming to keep things fresh. That includes new levels, new ghosts, and plenty of new tools. This year, Kinetic Games also announced a massive roadmap that includes full level redesigns and other in-game events.
We’ve seen quite a lot of adaptation announcements in recent weeks, including the Elden Ring movie adaptation officially helmed by Alex Garland, as well as an anime adaptation for Death Stranding.
Phasmophobia is now available on PC and consoles.
