The rumors have been swirling around for a while now but it’s finally official. Bandai Namco announced today that an Elden Ring movie is in the works. If that wasn’t exciting enough, it’s also set to be directed by Alex Garland and distributed by A24.
A24 is known for producing multiple critically acclaimed horror movies, including the likes of Hereditary and Midsommar from Ari Aster. That alone makes this A24/Bandai Namco partnership a match made in heaven. Going further than that, though, the project being helmed by Alex Garland is also something to be hyped about. Garland has directed movies like Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, and Warfare. He also served as the writer for Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, and is coming back to finish off the trilogy with 28 Years Later.
No other news or details have been provided about the Elden Ring movie. The announcement from Bandai Namco simply states that the game will be brought to life as a live-action film. George R.R. Martin, who helped write the lore for Elden Ring alongside director Hidetaka Miyazaki, will also be involved in the project.
Elden Ring was released back in 2022, and is notably FromSoftware’s biggest RPG to date. It brings back a lot of familiar elements from their previous games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and melds them together in one cohesive package. I personally reviewed it for Twinfinite back in the day, and called it the culmination of all of FromSoft’s efforts over the past decade.
Elden Ring is also getting a multiplayer spinoff title in the form of Nightreign, which is set to release later this month. Nightreign still retains many gameplay elements from Elden Ring, but it’s presented in a multiplayer rogue-lite format where players can band together to fight bosses while leveling up and finding different power-ups to keep their runs fresh.
Elden Ring is now available on PC and consoles.
