Your Octopath Traveler 0 Town Size Is Limited Depending on Your Platform

Octopath Traveler 0 will be releasing across all platforms this December, but as you may well know, not all platforms are created equal. Square Enix has released new information on the specs and performance you can expect from the game for each platform. Predictably, PS5, Xbox, and PC lead the pack in terms of performance. However, even if graphics and performance aren’t all that important to you, there’s one other important distinction to be aware of if you’re playing on Switch.

First, here are the specs:

As you can see, PS5, Xbox, and PC will allow you to enjoy up to 120fps, though the Switch 2 is no slouch either, able to hit 60fps. The Switch 1, however, is the laggard of the bunch, with only 30fps. In addition to that, Octopath Traveler 0‘s town-building element will also feel different depending on which platform you play on.

For folks who want to play on Switch 1, you’ll be able to place a maximum of 250 items in your town. Switch 2 players get 400, while everyone else gets 500. It’s not clear yet whether most of these are cosmetic, but hopefully they are. We already know that certain town structures will give you access to facilities like a cook, but perhaps the rest are simply cosmetic and are purely meant for decoration.

Even so, it’s something to be aware of if you’re looking forward to the town-building system in this game like I am. Further, it’s worth noting that even if you opt for the physical version on Switch, you’ll still need to download the game via the Game Key Card.

Octopath Traveler 0 is the third mainline entry in Square Enix’s HD-2D series, and serves as a callback to old-school 2D JRPGs.

Octopath Traveler 0 is set to be released for PC and consoles on Dec. 4, 2025.
