The Witcher is back in vogue, as CD Projekt Red has confirmed that they’ll be showing off the new DLC for The Witcher 3 at Gamescom this year, while also providing more information about The Witcher IV, which features Ciri as the protagonist. You can check out the video message from CD Projekt Red’s joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski down below.
Here’s the main takeaway, regarding The Witcher IV:
“Now, I know you’re eager to learn when it’s coming. That’s the question we’re hearing from you all the time. So while we’re not showing The Witcher IV at the event and we’re not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this. The Witcher IV is targeting a 2028 release window. I know it’s a bit of a wait and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait. Until then, there will be plenty more of The Witcher to come, including Songs of the Past when it launches in 2027. And you can be sure Gamescom is also in our plans for the coming years. See you on the path!”
The Songs of the Past DLC for The Witcher 3 was a bit of a surprise, until players started to realize it was probably going to serve as a narrative bridge between the third and fourth games of the series. This game also served as a nice bookend for Geralt’s story, and with The Witcher IV featuring Ciri taking the reins, this will mark a new saga or story arc that should be at least somewhat removed from Geralt and everything else that came before.
I wouldn’t necessarily put too much stock into Nowakowski’s targeted 2028 release date announcement, but I do get the sense that developers are starting to learn that it may be better to play things a little closer to the vest and not showing off or saying anything about a game until things are a bit more set in stone.
So for now, The Witcher IV is set to launch sometime in 2028.
