What better way to advertise a five year-old game than by releasing a TV adaptation of said video game on a major streaming network? The Last of Us Part II was among the top 10 best-selling games on PlayStation in April. I imagine this has something to do with Season 2 kicking off during that month as well.
According to a statistics report from Alinea Analytics, The Last of Us Complete Edition sold 222k copies on PlayStation in April. The Complete Edition was released on April 10, and it bundles both games together in a neat package for PS5. The game versions in the bundle are, of course, the remastered versions for both Part I and II. These versions come with PS5 Pro enhancements for Part I, as well as improved AI behavior and performance for both titles.

HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 premiering on April 13 is no coincidence, of course. It’s doubtless that Naughty Dog and Sony wanted to capitalize on the hype for Season 2, and decided to release the Complete Edition just a few days prior to entice TV fans to check out the source material. It’s also a great way for folks who have played them before to jump back into the games for a quick refresher. Honestly, though, I’m not so sure the enhanced version of The Last of Us Part II is entirely worth the money. Part I? Sure. I could see it. That game’s old enough that it deserves a little bit of a facelift, but even the original release still holds up very well today.
The Last of Us Season 2 is a direct adaptation of The Last of Us Part II, though HBO and showrunner Craig Mazin have taken some creative liberties with it. The changes to Abby and Ellie I’m not such a fan of, though I am curious to see what they eventually do with Eugene.
In related news, Isabela Merced (who plays Dina in the show) stated that production for Season 3 has yet to begin. It’s likely that production will only start in 2026, signaling at least a two year gap between seasons.
The Last of Us is now available for streaming on Max. The Last of Us video games are now available on PlayStation and PC.
