I Can’t Wait to Replay Metaphor: ReFantazio on Switch 2

Atlus has a tendency to release its games for every platform but the Switch, then announce it months later. I don’t get it! Just release it on Switch the first time and I’ll be a happy camper! But maybe that’s the strategy. They’re trying to get me to double dip. Which is exactly what I’m planning to do with Metaphor: ReFantazio this November.

Announced for the Switch 2 some time ago, Metaphor: ReFantazio will release on Switch 2 on Nov. 12, and pre-orders for the game are now open. You can check out the new trailer down below:

The story puts you in the shoes of the Protagonist, who finds himself in the running to become king in a tournament after the previous king was assassinated. In a fantastical world that has only ever known the monarchy, democracy is a concept that’s completely unheard of and ridiculous, yet that’s exactly what we’re doing here.

I reviewed Metaphor: ReFantazio for The Escapist when it first launched and came away really loving it. I found it to be a very refreshing departure from what Atlus has been doing with the Persona series for so many years, and the fantasy setting appealed to me. I did think that some of the characters were a little lacking in terms of development, but overall I enjoyed the cast and the entire journey. The battle system was a real highlight too; it’s a turn-based system with a Press Turn mechanic from Shin Megami Tensei, which means that enemies get extra turns if they’re able to exploit your weaknesses. The result is an extremely intense yet rewarding combat system that always feels thrilling.

Honestly, I could see this potentially vying for my attention alongside GTA VI when that comes out in November too. I thought Metaphor was weirdly overlooked at launch and months after it came out, and I do hope it gets the recognition it deserves with this re-release. Why’d you have to drop it so close to GTA VI, Atlus?!

Metaphor: ReFantazio is available now on PC and consoles, and is coming to Switch 2 on Nov. 12.
