Hideo Kojima Reassures Scaredy Cats That They, Too, Will Be Able to Play OD

This may very well end up being the best news I’ll hear all week. As a fan of Hideo Kojima’s works — I have my fair share of complaints, don’t worry — OD is shaping up to be a pretty fun and interesting project that I was looking forward to seeing more of. With just one problem: it looks way too damn scary.

If, like me, you are also facing the same dilemma of wanting to play OD but are too scared to even watch that terrifying trailer with Sophia Lillis, fret not. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kojima revealed that OD will have some sort of unique game system that would allow players who are too scared to continue playing through the fear.

“I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached. It’s a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible,” said Kojima. “But for those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going. I can’t say much more, because it’ll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much!”

That’s… honestly kinda reassuring. Too often when I play horror games, I can’t help but feel like the developers only care about delivering the spooks. Don’t get me wrong, that’s important. Delivering the spooks in a spooky game is one what makes the spooky game spooky. But just for once, it would be nice to feel like they care about the scaredy cat players who like the game but are just too afraid to continue on, y’know? I couldn’t get through PT myself, and I feared that OD would be the same.

In the interview, Kojima also stated that he wanted to do something different with OD. When he pitched the game to several companies, he was turned down by most of them, stating that it can’t be done or that he was crazy. Xbox’s former CEO Phil Spencer was the only one who understood his vision at the time. And now, current CEO Asha Sharma has also described the game as “deeply moving”.

At the time of writing, the game’s cast is as follows:

  • Sophia Lillis
  • Hunter Schafer
  • Udo Kier

The game is being made in collaboration with horror director and comedian Jordan Peele.

OD is currently in development for Xbox. There is no release date.
