Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles’ Switch 2 Upgrade Pack Will Be Free

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a remake of the classic tactical RPG, and it’ll be available on consoles and PC in September. If you’re like me, however, you’re probably going to want this game on the Switch so you can take it anywhere with you. Whether you’re purchasing it on Switch 1 or Switch 2, there’s some good news to be shared here.

The Switch 2 Upgrade Pack for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will be made available for free. In fact, it’s already available as a free claim on the Nintendo eShop ahead of the game’s release. This is crucial, as the physical version of the game is only available for the Switch 1 edition. This means that if you want to go physical, you’d be potentially locked out of a Switch 2 upgrade if Square Enix didn’t make this available. And it’s available for free, so you can go ahead and pick up that physical version with no worries.

Similarly, folks who may only have a Switch 1 at this point in time will be able to upgrade for free, whether they go physical or digital. This is a nice bit of consumer-friendliness on Square Enix’s part, especially in light of the recent news that Octopath Traveler 0 would not, in fact, come with a Switch 2 Upgrade Pack, nor are there any plans to release one in the future.

As for what the Upgrade Pack entails, the eShop description simply states that there are some improvements to the framerate and resolution for enhanced visual fidelity. I don’t necessarily expect this to offer up a night-and-day performance improvement like what we’ve seen for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but we’ll see when the game releases.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is set to be released for consoles and PC on Sept. 30.
