28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Gets its First Trailer & January Release Date

I gotta say, having to wait only seven months between movie sequels is incredibly refreshing. Especially after that killer cliffhanger that 28 Years Later ends on, knowing that the movie and its sequel The Bone Temple were filmed back-to-back really helps with that excruciating wait between installments. Anyway, Sony has just dropped the first official trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

You can check it out for yourself down below:

The Bone Temple picks up directly where 28 Years Later left off. Spike, played by Alfie Williams, reprises his role as the film’s protagonist, but we see that he’s now joined Jimmy (played by Jack O’Connell or Skins UK fame) and his cult of Jimmy Savile wannabes in their colorful jumpsuits acting like suped up Power Rangers. While it’s still unclear whether Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Jamie will return, we do know that Ralph Fiennes’ Dr Kelson will play a key role in this movie.

The trailer hints at a huge conflict between Kelson and the Jimmies, as the latter arrive at Kelson’s titular Bone Temple where he pays his respects to the dead. We also get a glimpse of Samson, the Alpha infected that chased down Spike and his parents in the first movie. We don’t know exactly what sort of beef Jimmy could have with Kelson, but I suspect things are about to get real dicey for Spike, whom we see decked out in a blonde wig to fit into the cult.

28 Years Later is a story that’s meant to be told through a trilogy. Cillian Murphy, who starred in 28 Days Later and serves as executive producer on Years, has stated that he’ll have a small role to play in The Bone Temple. And if this movie does well, the third installment will be greenlit, where Murphy will take on a much larger role. The Bone Temple will also be directed by Nia DaCosta, who has previously worked on Marvel’s The Eternals and Candyman. The movie was produced by Danny Boyle and penned by Alex Garland.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is set to air in theaters on Jan. 16, 2026.
