Who Is the Red Samurai in Death Stranding 2?

Death Stranding 2 introduces a lot of new characters into the mix. You’ll be pleased to know that all the new additions are way more interesting than the ones in its predecessor, and there’s one in particular that seems more intriguing than the rest. I am, of course, talking about the Red Samurai in Death Stranding 2. Here’s everything you need to know about this character.

Do be warned that this article contains major spoilers and character revelations.

Death Stranding 2 Red Samurai Identity Explained

The Red Samurai in Death Stranding 2 is none other than Deadman, though another character assumes his identity later on. I’ll talk about that in a bit.

The Red Samurai first shows up in Death Stranding 2 when Sam’s on his way back to his shelter in Mexico, after linking up Deadman’s lab. When Sam gets ambushed by ghost mechs, the Red Samurai turns up to fight them and help Sam. This happens a couple more times in the game, and they always present themselves as an ally.

It’s not till towards the end of the game that the Red Samurai finally takes off their mask to reveal that they’re actually Deadman. Even though Deadman had seemingly died and gone off to his Beach, his ka still endures. Ka is essentially a person’s soul or life force, and Deadman was able to use his ka to inhabit the body of the Red Samurai who uses his sword skills and DOOMS powers to fight and help Sam.

Later on, in the game’s final act, Higgs inhabits the body of the Red Samurai when Deadman is back with Heartman. After Sam and Fragile destroy Higgs’ body, we see him later as the Red Samurai. It’s implied that just like Deadman, Higgs is also able to use his ka to inhabit lifeless bodies.

How Is Deadman Still Alive?

Deadman isn’t actually alive. He tells us as much at the start of the game when he discovers his Beach. As mentioned previously though, his ka endured and he was able to use it to inhabit lifeless bodies.

Later on in the game when we meet Heartman, we also learn that Heartman took Deadman’s heart with him as insurance. Every 21 minutes when Heartman’s own heart stops, Deadman is able to use his ka to inhabit Heartman’s body and act in his stead. This power opens up a lot of possibilities for Deadman, as you’ll soon see in the story.

And that’s everything you need to know about the Red Samurai in Death Stranding 2. It’s confusing, I know.
