The Pitt Season 2 Will Explore the Impact of Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill & Medicaid Changes on the ER

The Pitt is one of HBO Max’s more recent breakout success stories, starring Noah Wyle of ER fame as he teams up with Executive Producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill, who also worked on the 2000s medical drama. The first season already explored social issues present in real life, such as certain demographics being sidelined in the ER, along with other topics like gun control, which is very prevalent in the US. The Pitt Season 2 will be making its return in 2026, and it’s been confirmed that the show will continue to explore these real-life issues and the impact they have on the Emergency Room.

Specifically, we’ll see the impact of the Big, Beautiful Bill passed and signed into law by the Trump administration in July 2025. The Bill includes a 12% cut to Medicaid spending, which means that US citizens will have less government assistance where healthcare is concerned, and that is undoubtedly going to have an effect on the healthcare world as well. After all, if people are getting less healthcare, Gemmill states, “they’re going to end up in the only place where they can get free healthcare, which is the ER. So the ER is just going to get busier and busier and become more of a safety net, and it’s already broken, so the system is destined for a tipping point.”

Speaking with Variety, Wells also mentioned that the creative team for The Pitt has had calls with “hundreds of medical professionals to predict the immediate concerns for hospitals within the next year” after the Bill was passed. Gemmill added that their team “take[s] [their] platform very seriously.” With the success of The Pitt and how wide of an audience it’s reached, Gemmill says “with that amount of people listening, you have to be responsible for what you put out there.”

The Pitt Season 2 will take place over the course of a 12-hour shift, just like its first season, and will run for 15 episodes. More excitingly, the season will take place during the Fourth of July weekend, so you can imagine the kind of chaos we’ll inevitably see as the show goes on.

The Pitt Season 2 will premiere in January 2026 on HBO Max.
