Superman: Man of Tomorrow Will See the Return of Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor

Superman‘s barely been out a couple months, and we’ve already got confirmation for the release date of the next movie in the DC cinematic universe. James Gunn has announced that his Superman follow-up will be titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, and it’ll premiere on July 9, 2027.

This announcement came via James Gunn’s Twitter/X account, where he also shared new artwork by comic book artist Jim Lee. The art features Lex Luthor and Superman standing side by side. Notable, Lex has donned his iconic green and purple power armor, while Superman can be seen holding a screwdriver, suggesting that the latter probably helped with tuning up Lex’s new outfit.

Actor David Corenswet also posted artwork of Superman and Lex (by Jorge Jimenez) to accompany Gunn’s announcement.

And the biggest announcement of all: Actor Nicholas Hoult will be reprising his role as Lex Luthor. Hoult took to Instagram to post even more artwork of the two characters, this time by Mitch Gerads. Interestingly, the Gerads piece features both characters locked in combat with each other. It’s probably safe to say that Superman and Lex will likely continue their personal conflicts with each other, but eventually join forces to fight a common enemy.

While Lex Luthor is regarded as one of Superman’s biggest villains, it should be noted that he’s actually joined the Justice League in the New 52 comic run, and has also been portrayed as Superman’s ally in more recent iterations of the story. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility to see the two working together as allies going forward.

We’ve still got a long way to go before we get to see this movie though. In the meantime, we’ll have Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to look forward to next year.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow will premiere on July 9, 2027.
