Surprising absolutely no one, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has confirmed that James Gunn, who directed 2025’s Superman, will be writing and directing “the next installment in the Super-Family.” The statement was made during the company’s earnings call, as reported by Variety.
Prior to this, Gunn had hinted to Variety that he would pen the script for another movie starring David Corenswet’s Superman. However, we now have confirmation that Gunn will also be in charge of directing said movie. In terms of what the movie actually is, though, we have no idea. Gunn had also stated to Variety that this movie would be a follow-up to Superman, but he was hesitant to call it a “sequel”.
As for what’s coming up in the pipeline for the DCU, we have Supergirl set to premiere in 2026, starring Milly Alcock as the titular character. We also know we’re getting a Clayface movie, which is set to start filming this year and premiere in 2026. On the TV front, James Gunn’s own Peacemaker Season 2 will air on HBO Max on Aug. 21, and run for eight episodes. Now that the DCU’s latest Superman movie is out in the wild, the company will be making a more concerted effort in tying its projects together, even if the connections might seem minor at first.
James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought on to head DC Studios back in 2022 and reset the DCU, creating a connected universe that could potentially rival what Marvel has done with the MCU. So far, so good. The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Superman have all been well-received, and Supergirl is looking pretty promising as well. What I really want, though, is a Krypto movie. Cut out the rest of the superheroes. Just give me a two-hour flick with the superdog. Is that really so much to ask?
