Return to Silent Hill Is a Movie Adaptation of Silent Hill 2

The Silent Hill movies have been a little hit-or-miss for me, but I will say that the very first Silent Hill movie adaptation from Christophe Gans was a definite hit. I wasn’t a fan of how it appropriated Pyramid Head for a story that wasn’t James Sunderland’s, but overall, the movie was carried by strong performances, the ambience, and a great plot that drew from the original game while also making it its own thing. Gans is coming back to the IP with a new movie called Return to Silent Hill, and you can check out the trailer for yourself down below.

Return to Silent Hill is based on the plot of Silent Hill 2, which means we’ll be getting James’ story this time around. You’ll notice pretty quickly, though, that movie James looks way different than what you might be used to in the game. Still, the press release suggests that the plot will remain largely the same. James receives a mysterious letter from his deceased wife Mary, which calls him back to the town of Silent Hill. As he looks for Mary, he’s forced to face horrific creatures while trying to figure out just what’s going on with this place.

Jeremy Irvine will play James Sunderland, while Hannah Emily Anderson will play Mary. The teaser trailer is short, but gives us a glimpse of Silent Hill itself, our protagonist, and a quick shot of Pyramid Head, who’s become synonymous with the series at this point.

After directing the 2006 Silent Hill movie, Christophe Gans was originally supposed to come back to helm Silent Hill: Revelation in 2012. After he dropped out of the project, however, the movie entered development hell. Even with a big name actor like Game of Thrones‘ own Kit Harington starring, Revelation was panned by critics and fans alike. With Gans back at the helm for Return to Silent Hill, I’m feeling a bit more optimistic about this movie’s chances.

Return to Silent Hill will premiere on Jan. 23, 2026.
