Persona 4 Revival Will Make Changes to Yosuke’s Character, But Not the Romantic Ones I Was Hoping For

During Anime Expo 2026, Persona 4 Revival General Producer Kazuhisa Wada shared some details about the upcoming remake and the changes we can expect. One of the aspects he touched on was the rewriting for some of the characters, including my personal favorite, Yosuke Hanamura.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I would absolutely kill to have a Yosuke romance plot in Persona 4 Revival. It’s pretty much the only thing that will get me invested in Revival, especially considering that Persona 4 Golden still holds up extremely well today and I’m not entirely sure there’s much point to a remake unless there’s new content to look forward to. In an interview with Anime Corner, Wada stated that the writing changes will mostly center around Yosuke, but from what he’s saying, it’s sounding like Yosuke will be sanded off a little bit and it remains unlikely we’ll see that cut romance content.

When asked about the controversial elements of the original game, such as Kanji’s sexuality and the way his dungeon was portrayed, Wada stated that “the final message is that we haven’t changed anything core about the characters.” Everything has been kept “as is, but we’ve just brushed up the kind of corners of that to make sure it all fits and really is appropriate for the characters and the age that we live in now.”

Wada goes on to state: “We’ve just maybe changed the way that we express some of this a little bit, mostly with Yosuke really. He’s a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes. So we wanted to lighten that up and make it a little bit more fitting for the world that we live in now.”

I’m pretty sure Wada is referring to that infamous scene of the protagonist, Yosuke, and Kanji sleeping in the tent during a school event. After rescuing Kanji, Yosuke displays some nervousness about Kanji’s sexuality and asks if he’s going to try to pull anything on them while they’re asleep. It’s a blatantly homophobic line that ultimately does nothing for Yosuke aside from making him look like a jerk, and I’m willing to bet that’s what Wada means when he says they’re going to lighten him up.

I say that line does nothing for Yosuke, but in reality, if his social link was about him coming to terms with his own feelings for the protagonist, Yosuke could’ve had a very interesting character arc that explores his internalized homophobia. Alas, while it’s nice that Atlus wants to make the game feel less homophobic, this does make me less hopeful that Yosuke’s romance arc will be added to the game.

Persona 4 Revival is set to be released for PC and consoles on Feb. 18, 2027.
