I’ve never been a big fan of multiverses and parallel universes but I’ll be the first to admit that when it’s handled well, it serves as a great narrative device that can really help to propel a character’s development. With Peacemaker Season 2, James Gunn is looking to achieve just that.
HBO Max has just dropped a new trailer for Peacemaker Season 2, which you can check out for yourself down below.
This season will see the return of Peacemaker’s crew, or the 11th Street Kids, as they took to calling themselves in Season 1. The crew seems to be getting on well with each other, but things get complicated with two new plot beats: First, Rick Flag, Sr. is out to get revenge on Chris for killing his son. Second, Chris somehow has access to a dimensional portal that lets him visit alternate universes. So yeah. Things are gonna get complicated very quickly.
There are many reasons why the idea of escaping into an alternate universe would be so appealing to Chris. He wants to live in a world where his father isn’t a racist asshole and actually loves him. He wants a universe where Harcourt can return his feelings. Most importantly, though, he wants to be an actual superhero that people love and respect, and not known as the racist superhero who just goes on a rampage whenever it’s convenient for him.
Having just watched all of Peacemaker Season 1 this year in preparation for Season 2 (and because I’m still riding that DCU Superman high), I was pleasantly surprised by how moving the show was. While John Cena certainly delivered a strong performance as the titular character in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, he wasn’t really given much of a chance to shine beyond the comic relief villain veneer. Peacemaker, however, offers a very nuanced take on his character, humanizes him, and turns him into an anti-hero you might actually be able to root for. Season 2 looks to build upon that foundation, and it’ll be interesting to see how this ties into the DCU going forward as well.
Peacemaker Season 2 will be available for streaming on Aug. 21 exclusively on HBO Max.
