It’s already been almost a year since the release of Atlus’ critically acclaimed JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio. To celebrate the game’s one-year anniversary, the company will be hosting a celebration livestream on the Atlus YouTube channel on Oct. 11, at 12 a.m. Eastern Time.
Details are scarce on what will actually be covered during the livestream but we know there will be some sort of special message from the developers. Given Atlus’ track record, I wouldn’t be surprised if they announce some sort of definitive edition or re-release of the game. They’ve done this with every Persona game since Persona 3, and these re-releases usually include new content like additional characters or wholly new dungeons. One year does seem a bit short, and even Persona 5 Royal came out like three years after the original.
Outside of that, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Atlus lean hard into Metaphor: ReFantazio as a new franchise for the company either. Anime and movie adaptations inbound, perhaps? Spinoff games in the rhythm game or musou genre maybe? A gacha game in the vein of Persona X? I guess we’ll see.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a fantasy JRPG that centers around the death of a king. After he passes, claimants to the throne are forced to participate in a tournament, where the new ruler will be decided by how popular they are among the masses. Basically, this world gets introduced to democracy for the first time. Things aren’t that straightforward of course, and there are plenty of fun story twists to look forward to along the way. While I enjoyed it thoroughly and felt that the cast of characters introduced were way more dynamic and interesting than in Persona 5, it does suffer from the JRPG curse of having a rather draggy last act to the point where I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Still, the battle system being a beautiful blend of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei was the right move and I’m definitely excited to see where Atlus goes next with this.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is now available for PC and consoles.
