It’s been 10 years since the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (which I’ve been having a blast replaying), which means it’s also been 10 years since Hideo Kojima’s nasty divorce with Konami and the setting up of Kojima Productions, his own independent studio. To celebrate this milestone, the company has announced an event called Beyond the Strand, which will take place on Sept. 23, offering fans a glimpse into what the studio will be working on next.
The event itself will be held in Roppongi, Tokyo. Tickets will go on sale today in Japan via the Lawson ticket lottery. Tickets are priced at 7,700 yen, which is roughly around 50 USD. Not too shabby so hey, you could totally book a trip to Tokyo if you get lucky in the lottery.
Anyway, Beyond the Strand will be a celebration of 10 years of Kojima Productions. To date, the company has released two games, Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, both of which have been critical and commercial successes. We also already know what the company has in store for us next. OD is a horror game made in collaboration with director Jordan Peele and Xbox, while Physint is set to be a tactical espionage action game similar to the likes of Metal Gear. It’s unlikely that we’ll see anything concrete for the latter, but I’d certainly expect to see or at least hear something new about OD.
Beyond that, it’s also possible that Kojima Productions may announce other new projects. Perhaps we’ll get a glimpse of the new Death Stranding anime series or the movie from A24. Or maybe Kojima himself will announce that he’s finally directing a movie, though that’d be going against the advice of his film director friends.
The event will also be livestreamed, with details coming at a later date. I’ll be tuning in, so keep it locked to Retcon for more details coming soon.
