Cozy is not exactly the word you’d use to describe Game of Thrones, or its book series A Song of Ice and Fire. Yet, that’s exactly how I feel watching the new trailer HBO’s just put out for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the network’s new spinoff series set in the ASoIaF universe.
Don’t just take my word for it, though. You can check out the trailer for yourself down below:
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on a series of novellas written by George R.R. Martin, set within Westeros. The story is set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and it follows the adventures of Dunk and Egg: Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon Targaryen (the fifth, I think… don’t quote me on that. There are too many of them around). If the name Ser Duncan the Tall sounds familiar to you, it should. He’s mentioned very briefly in Game of Thrones as part of the old tales told to the children.
Season 1 will run for six episodes, and will follow the adventures of Dunk and Egg as they travel across Westeros together, participating in various tourneys. From what I’ve heard of the novellas, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is supposed to feel a lot more light-hearted and warm in tone, as compared with the main series. I still expect plenty of violence — this is a HBO show, after all — but after all the death and carnage and betrayals in Game of Thrones, I’m ready for some comic relief and “funny unlikely pairing” shenanigans.
Dunk will be played by Peter Claffey, while Egg will be played by Dexter Sol Ansell. Will the show retain the iconic Ramin Djawadi intro, though? I guess we’ll see.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to air on HBO Max on Jan. 16, 2026.
