HBO’s Harry Potter Is Already Looking More Faithful to the Books than the Movies Were

HBO has just dropped a second teaser trailer for the upcoming Harry Potter series, offering an extended look at the three protagonists and their distinct personalities. You can check out the new trailer for yourself down below:

Right off the bat, I have to say I’m loving seeing Harry, Ron, and Hermione again, though I will note that everything we’ve seen of HBO’s Harry Potter so far looks like a glorified reimagining of the original movies. I mean, Hermione’s “Don’t you two read?” sounds like it came straight out of Emma Watson’s take on the character, and I’m sure there are solid differences in there somewhere, but the costumes and set also look like they were reused from the movies. I’m not complaining; those costume and set designs were amazing. But I guess I was kinda expecting something to look a little different? Maybe I’m just nitpicking, though.

One detail that I did appreciate was the fact that Neville was there with the main trio when they first discover Fluffy, the three-headed dog. This is a detail that was cut from the first movie to help save time and condense things, but Neville’s presence during that scene is kinda vital, especially as he’s the one who stands up to the trio when they try to sneak out of the common room later on. We already know that the show is going to be way more faithful to the source material than the movies, so I’m expecting to see Peeves, which is probably the main thing that I’m most excited for.

We also got a glimpse of Snape, played by Paapa Essiedu, who comes off as delightfully threatening, though he does have more of a “tortured good guy” look than Alan Rickman’s Snape ever did, at least in the first few installments. Definitely excited to see more of him, as well as Nick Frost’s take on Hagrid.

In other Harry Potter related news, Kit Harington has been tapped to play Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2, replacing Nicholas Hoult.

HBO’s Harry Potter will debut on Christmas Day.
