GTA VI’s Launch Trailer Wants to Sell You on Jason & Lucia’s Relationship

Anyone else think it’s weird to release a launch trailer for a game that’s still a month away from release? No? Just me? Well, doesn’t matter because I’m not gonna complain about seeing more GTA VI footage. Rockstar has just dropped the launch trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, which you can check out down below:

First off, for those wondering, the song playing in the trailer is called Flower In a Hurricane by Justice, Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. I believe it’s an original track for the game, and that’s already available for streaming on your favorite music streaming services.

The trailer itself doesn’t show any gameplay, and instead focuses on cinematic scenes from the game and more of the relationship dynamic between Jason and Lucia. The Extended Look gave us a good taste of what to expect from the game and we saw a ton of emergent gameplay and other activities, such as robberies, basketball, gym workouts, strip club visits and more. But, really, it’s the romantic relationship between Jason and Lucia that’s going to make or break GTA VI, in my view.

Whereas GTA V also offered up three different protagonists you could switch between at any point in time — and don’t get me wrong, that was revolutionary — GTA VI builds upon that foundation, and also centers its entire story around its dual protagonists. Whereas Franklin, Michael, and Trevor felt like three disparate characters with stories that sometimes converged, Jason and Lucia are perpetually intertwined, and I think that’s going to make for some very interesting storytelling moments.

I have little doubt that GTA VI is going to nail all the immersive open-world bits. Rockstar has proven time and time again they know how to make an immersive open-world. As far as the story goes, however, while GTA has always had serviceable stories, one could argue that the Red Dead Redemption games are the games you play if you want a properly serious narrative. Rockstar looks to be bridging the immersion of GTA with the more engaging story elements of Red Dead Redemption in GTA VI, and again, I think the game’s success is going to hinge on how invested you are in Jason and Lucia.

Grand Theft Auto VI will be available for PS5 on Nov. 19.
