Perfect timing, as I’ve just completed an ill-advised rewatch of HBO’s Game of Thrones and am in the middle of an ill-advised reread of A Song of Ice and Fire. After winning big at The Emmys, with The Pitt beating out Severance for Best Drama, HBO boss Casey Bloys sat down with The Wrap to talk about what’s coming up next for HBO. It looks like Game of Thrones fever will be back in full force in 2026, as Bloys confirmed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will start airing in January 2026.
When asked about when a Game of Thrones show would be back in the release cycle, Bloys confidently replied: “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be in January, and then House of the Dragon will probably be just outside this Emmy cycle.”
For the uninitiated, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the story of Dunk and Egg, better known as Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon Targaryen. The stories show Dunk’s rise as the humble Hedge Knight, who eventually becomes widely known all throughout Westeros and makes a name for himself in the region’s legends. Aegon Targaryen needs no introduction, aside from the fact that he’s seen as one of the weaker Targaryen boys due to his physicality. Together, Dunk and Egg make an unlikely pair that travels around Westeros taking on various tourneys together, with Egg acting as Dunk’s squire.
House of the Dragon, on the other hand, is poised for a Season 3 return. This one, I’m not such a fan of. Season 1 started off pretty strong before ending in a mess, and I couldn’t even bring myself to finish Season 2, so I’m not sure I’ll back for its third outing. But hey, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sounds promising at the very least, so it’ll be interesting to see what HBO can do with it.
