Do You Need PS Plus for Death Stranding 2?

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach doesn’t exactly feature full-on multiplayer gameplay, but there are online multiplayer elements that can help to elevate the experience. If you’re playing Death Stranding 2 on PS5 and wondering if you need PS Plus to enjoy those online features, here’s what you need to know.

Do You Need PS Plus for Death Stranding 2 Multiplayer?

The short answer, and the good news, is no. A PlayStation Plus subscription is not required to enjoy the online elements of Death Stranding 2. This is because the multiplayer portion of Death Stranding 2 is purely asynchronous. There’s no way to enter a shared world with other players in PvE or PvP modes. All you need is an internet connection on your console, and you’re good to go.

That being said, while it sounds minor, I’d argue that the multiplayer and social elements are integral to the Death Stranding 2 experience. I’ll go into a little more detail about that below.

Death Stranding 2 Online Multiplayer Elements Explained

Just like the first game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach features asynchronous multiplayer. What this means is that whatever structures or roads you build might show up in other players’ games, and vice versa.

For example, if you construct a handy bridge that helps you to easily cross a gap in-game, that bridge could very well show up in my game, allowing me to cross easily without needing to expend any resources. Not all structures will appear for everyone, and I believe Death Stranding 2 makes use of a shard system to control who sees what. You are way more likely to see structures that people on your friends list have built, though, so that should be fun.

In addition to that, players can also leave Likes on a structure that someone else built, which may improve the chances of it showing up in more game worlds. Finally, if you’re constructing a huge project like a giant road or highway, you don’t have to do it alone. Other players will be able to contribute their own resources to help finish it quicker, which can be handy.

Hopefully that clears up any confusion about Death Stranding 2 and PS Plus. I’ll be working through the game myself this week, so keep an eye out for our review.
