Death Stranding’s Anime Adaptation Will Be an Adult-Targeted Movie

Hideo Kojima previously, casually revealed that Death Stranding was getting an anime adaptation, which is a separate project from the A24 movie that’s already in the works. Thanks to a report from Deadline, we now have more information on what this anime project entails.

First, Aaron Guzikowski, who’s best known for working on Raised by Wolves, will be penning the screenplay for the Death Stranding anime movie. And yes, it will be an anime movie instead of a series. In addition to that, the movie will be an “adult-targeted, animated genre film” similar to the likes of the John Wick anime prequel and Predator: Killer of Killers.

This project will be handled by Line Mileage, an animation company based in Los Angeles. Rather than a straight copy/adaptation of the original Death Stranding story, the anime movie will instead feature an original story set in the Death Stranding universe.

“I love the world of Death Stranding, it’s so creatively freeing, so beautifully dark and yet hopeful; I’m so excited and honored that Hideo Kojima, whose work I’ve long admired, has invited me to dwell within his creation, to birth new stories into this fertile, mind-bending universe,” said Guzikowski.

“Drawing and animation have always been near and dear to my heart, so to finally get to play in this space is a dream come true.”

Deadline

Making the Death Stranding anime adaptation a full-length feature movie seems like a good way to go. Mostly because I’m not sure if I’d have the time or patience to wait a week between 20-minute episodes. Plus, knowing Kojima, this also makes sense since he’s so much more into making movies rather than series. This does, however, make me wonder what the A24 movie will cover, if this is already going to be an original story. Regardless, it’ll be exciting to see what other stories Hideo Kojima is able to come up with in this universe. If they’re all gonna be new stories, I’m here for that.

Still, going with an original story will always be the way to go. Just look at the success of Fallout, and the not-so-successful The Last of Us adaptation.

Death Stranding is now available on PC and consoles. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to be released on June 26 for PS5.
