The main story of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will allow you to meet most of its interesting denizens, but some of them can only be discovered if you go off the beaten path. Case in point, the Inventor is one of them. Here’s everything you need to know about the Inventor in Death Stranding 2. I’ll go over how to find him, his rewards, and who he’s played by.
How to Find and Get to the Inventor in Death Stranding 2

The Inventor is located on a small island just north of West Fort Knot in Death Stranding 2. From West Fort Knot, go further up north to find the mines, then go even further up to find a small island in the middle of the water. There, you’ll find the Inventor’s facility.
However, getting to the facility itself isn’t so straightforward. It’s completely surrounded by water, so if you make one wrong move, you’ll get washed away into the ocean. The good news is that there is a path you can walk across to get to the Inventor in Death Stranding 2. While standing at the edge of the water, hit L1 to activate your scanner and look for the shallow waters marked in yellow.
The yellow areas should form a walkable path that you can follow, allowing you to cross the water safely to get to the Inventor. You can do this on foot, or even in a vehicle.
Alternatively, you can also use the monorail from the mines to zoom over, then just drop down once you’re directly above the Inventor’s island. Later on in the game, you’ll also unlock ziplines, and you can consider setting them up on the coast and on the island to zipline back and forth.
That being said, I’d recommend just keeping it simple. Just scan the damn water, create some guideposts, and walk or drive along it.
One thing to keep in mind is that just getting to the island isn’t enough. You need to bring a piece of cargo in order for the Inventor to acknowledge you. In my game, I found some Lost Cargo for the Inventor near the mines, and you should be able to find other pieces near the area as well.
Rank Rewards For the Inventor

Just like all other facilities in Death Stranding 2, ranking up your connection level with the Inventor will reward you with a bunch of cool items. I’ve listed all the rewards below:
- Rank 1: Otter Head
- Rank 2: Stun Bomb
- Rank 3: Remote Stun Bomb
- Rank 4: Bola Stun Gun
- Rank 5: Custom Hologram: The Inventor, Patch 63: Otter Hood
You can increase your connection quickly by completing Orders, Aid Requests, and delivering Lost Cargo. The Otter Head hood alone makes this entire trek worth it because it’s just so damn cute, and Sam will automatically put the hood up whenever it rains. He’ll also wear it when he’s in the water, and it’s worth noting that the Otter Head also helps to improve your swimming capabilities.
Jokes aside, though, it’s also worth getting to Rank 4 for that Bola Stun Gun. For folks who want to enjoy a more stealthy playthrough, or if you just want another cool toy to play around with, the Bola Stun Gun is one of the best and more enjoyable weapons you can get in Death Stranding 2.
Who Is the Inventor?
The Inventor is played by Jon McElroy, who is a former director at Annapurna Interactive. While he’s not exactly a celebrity like most of the other NPCs in Death Stranding 2, he’s still a fairly prominent figure in the video games industry. Annapurna Interactive is also known for putting out unique and sometimes cinematic indie games, which are totally up Kojima’s wheelhouse, so it’s not surprising to see him here.
