The Legend of Zelda is getting a film adaptation, and is slated for a 2027 release. Just last week, Nintendo announced that there would be a slight delay in releasing the movie. It’s now set for a May 27, 2027 release instead.
Today, it seems that casting for the movie has begun. This news comes by way of industry insider Daniel Richtman, who’s had a pretty good track record with leaks and scoops within the gaming and entertainment spaces. According to Richtman, casting has begun for Link and Zelda specifically. In addition, casting directors are looking for actors aged between 16 and 23.
This makes sense, considering that Link and Zelda are generally portrayed as teenagers in most of the games, or even children in some cases. We don’t know exactly what the movie will be adapting, but fans can rest assured that the studio is at least looking for game-accurate depictions of these beloved characters. Casting has also begun for other important mainstays like Ganondorf and Impa.
Casting is expected to wrap up by August, with filming and production to begin in November. In addition, this project will consist of a trilogy of movies, so all actors will be locked in for six years.
This movie is a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony Pictures. The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto is also involved in the project, and has stated that Nintendo was given a very hands-on role in its development. The movie will be directed by Wes Ball, who worked on The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Not a particularly inspiring portfolio if you ask me, but maybe he’ll find his footing in Hyrule.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom recently got upgraded editions on the Switch 2 as well, allowing them to run at 60fps on Nintendo’s new console.
