I’d much rather have Yoko Taro work on a new NieR game or Drakengard, or something entirely new in the video game space. But honestly? Whatever that man does next, I’m 100% there for. Even if it’s a reboot of an anime series I’ve never been able to bring myself to watch. Even if that series happens to be Evangelion.
During the Evangelion 30th Anniversary festival today, it was announced that Yoko Taro would be working on a brand new Evangelion anime series. The script will be written by Taro, and the series will be directed by Toko Yatabe and Kazuya Tsurumaki. Production will be handled by Studio Khara and CloverWorks. And, more excitingly, the Keiichi Okabe has also been tapped to compose the music for the series.
For the uninitiated, Keiichi Okabe has worked on composing the soundtracks for the two NieR games, both of which are fantastic. This Okabe + Taro combo is one that I’m a big fan of, and if the short teaser trailer is anything to go by, the music in this new series is probably gonna be pretty good too. There are no other details about the series, including what it’ll be about and when it’ll actually release, but the announcement itself is enough for now, at least for me, someone who’s never watched a single episode of Evangelion.
For series fans, though, I’m sure this raises a lot of questions. From what I know of the show, Evangelion had a solid ending with no more stories left to tell for its characters and the universe. Will we be seeing a reboot from Taro? Or perhaps an entirely new story that’s completely separate from what we know? From what I know of Taro, it’s probably the latter.
Evangelion is now available for streaming. There’s no information on Yoko Taro’s new series just yet.
