“This Isn’t an Open-World Game”: Resident Evil Requiem Director Squashes Silly Speculation

A couple weeks back, a new clip of Resident Evil Requiem surfaced on the internet, courtesy of NVIDIA looking to show off the game’s ray-tracing capabilities. In that clip, we saw Grace walking through a bustling city street. Those few seconds alone were enough to send the internet on a spiral, as fans began speculating that maybe this was going to be an open-world game when, you know, it seemed painfully obvious to me that was just going to be a story-focused walking segment that shows Grace in her natural habitat.

In an interview with Game Informer, Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi confirms that this is not, in fact, an open-world game.

“[The development team] did just want to make clear one point. They’ve seen some speculation of whether there’s any open-world elements in this game, and they just want to set the record straight that this isn’t an open-world game.”

So there you have it. Can we stop it with the silly rumors and spiraling about how Capcom isn’t great at making open-world games? Which isn’t even true anyway, as proven by Dragon’s Dogma II, which was an excellent open-world title. Anyway, Resident Evil Requiem will likely feature big environments, just as the previous entries in the series did, and will allow you to take control of dual protagonists Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy. Requiem will take us back to Raccoon City, which should serve as a nice bit of nostalgia for long-time fans.

Capcom also recently hosted a showcase going over even more gameplay details, including special zombies, the protagonists’ play styles, and collaborations planned with brands like Hamilton and Porsche. I, for one, am pretty interested in seeing what Capcom does with these new zombies. Clearly they’ll be more evolved than their earlier counterparts, but maybe not quite as intelligent as the ones we’ve seen in 4?

Resident Evil Requiem is set to be released for PC and consoles on Feb. 27.
