Square Enix Is Reportedly Working on a Dragon Quest VII Remake

It looks like Dragon Quest is making a bit of a resurgence. Ever since the success of Dragon Quest XI, Square Enix has been putting in a bit more effort in making older games in the series more accessible for a modern audience. And if the rumors are to be believed, it looks like Square Enix may be looking to remake Dragon Quest VII next.

According to a report from MP1st, Square Enix is currently working on a remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. MP1st claims to have seen internal documents that outline several projects due within the fiscal year of 2027. This means that if the remake rumors are true, then the earliest we’ll see the Dragon Quest VII remake is in the first quarter of 2026.

The keyword here is, of course, “remake”. This suggests that the Dragon Quest VII project won’t just be a graphical upgrade or cleanup job. Similar to the Dragon Quest III HD Remake, this will likely get a full, from the ground up remake, possibly with new quality-of-life improvements and other features.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past was originally released back in 2000 for the PS1. It was then re-released for the 3DS and mobile devices in 2015 and 2016, though we never got an English version of the mobile port. The seventh mainline entry is considered to be one of the more popular games in the series, though one could probably argue that Dragon Quest VIII is the big one that really put the series on the map. Combat and battles are done through a turn-based system, and players will also be able to explore large environments, though the game’s world is split into different continents instead of just one big open-world to run around in.

Personally, I’ve not had much experience with the Dragon Quest series outside of XI, so this is pretty exciting news. Though if I’m being real with you, I’d much rather get that Dragon Quest VIII remake instead.
