Is it really a farming sim/slice-of-life game if you can’t romance NPCs and make them yours? No, of course not. Here’s a complete romance guide for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma. I’ll be going through Bond Quests, dating and marrying NPCs, the eligible NPCs for romance, as well as some commonly asked questions.
How Does Romance Work in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma?

The romance system in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma works just like how you’d expect it to in real life. You meet an NPC, offer to hang out with them, chat with them, and give them gifts. This allows you to become closer to them. Eventually, you’ll be able to express your feelings for them and even ask them to marry you. Just like in real life!
It’s even possible to have a child with your chosen paramour, though this ties into the post-game section and a few other quests that you can only access after beating the main story.
How to Romance Someone in Guardians of Azuma
I went over this briefly, but I’ll go into a bit more detail about what the process entails:
- Interact with an NPC and chat with them.
- Choose the hang out option to ask them out.
- Complete personal requests for them.
- Complete Bond Quests if you want to become more intimate with them.
How to Get Intimacy and Increase Bond Level

It’s important to note that Bond Level and Intimacy are not the same thing in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma. Pretty much everything you do for an NPC will help to increase your Bond Level with them. For example, chatting, hanging out, and completing personal requests with help to raise your Bond Level.
But as I mentioned earlier, dating and marrying someone requires you to raise your Intimacy level. This can only be done by completing Bond Quests, which are slightly more involved than regular personal requests.
You can check your Intimacy level by looking at a character’s profile and checking the number of hearts you have with them in the bottom right corner of the screen.
How to Date and Get Married

After reaching four hearts with a character, talk to them and choose the option that says “I love you!” This allows you to express your feelings for them. Do note that your Bond Level also needs to be raised sufficiently, or you may get rejected. Don’t worry if that happens, though. Even if you get rejected, you can always try again later once you’ve gotten your Bond Level up.
After the confession, you’ll meet the NPC at the shrine in their village a few days later, where they’ll either reject or accept you. If the NPC accepts your feelings, you’ll become Partners and you can start going on dates together. You can do this by talking to them and inviting them out on a date.
After going on three dates with a Partner, you can marry them. Here’s how you can do that:
- Get a Plum Branch.
- Brew Divine Spirits.
- Tell your Partner to meet you at the Fateweaver Shrine.
First, talk to Woolby about the possibility of getting married. This will allow you to plant the Plum sapling, and you’ll be able to get the Plum Branch from the same spot after a few days have passed. You’ll also get the Divine Spirits recipe from Woolby, which requires Rice and Wisteria to craft. The latter is easily harvestable from the Vast Plateau; just look around the trees.
Finally, once you have made all the preparations, propose to your Partner. Tell them to meet you at the Fateweaver Shrine on the proposed date. After getting married, your Partner will hang out with you daily at the Shrine.
Can You Date or Marry Multiple People?
You can date as many people as you’d like in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, but you can only marry one person. In addition, marriage is permanent and irreversible. Make sure you’ve properly thought about this before committing to someone.
Once you get married, you can only be friends with the other NPCs and there’s no way of becoming romantic with them.
Can You Have Same-Sex Relationships?
Yes! Kudos to Guardians of Azuma for being so progressive and inclusive. You can indeed have same-sex relationships with any NPC in the game. This doesn’t prevent you from being able to have children either, so go crazy.
How to Have a Child in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma
Marriage isn’t the end! You can still have a baby with your Partner in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma to keep the romance alive. Allow a few days to pass after getting married, and your Partner will ask if you’re ready to have a child together. If you say yes, you’ll go back to the Fateweaver Shrine to pray for a child.
After another few days have passed, you’ll get to choose the gender as well as some personality traits. You can also have these chosen by random if you’d like. Once the decision has been finalized, the child will be born a few days later. There will also be a bit of a time jump so your child will be a little older when they spawn into the game.

Benefits of Raising Bond Levels
There’s more to getting close to NPCs than just romance. Even as friends, it’s worth it to try to raise your Bond Level with everyone you meet. This is because these NPCs can be added to your party, up to a total of six characters at a time. The higher your Bond Level with someone, the more skills they’ll unlock in combat.
This can be very helpful as they can provide stat boosts, as well as use new skills to make combat even easier. So yeah, even if you’re not planning on romancing someone, definitely hang out with them anyway if you want them to be useful in your party.
And that does it for our Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma romance guide!
