Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has been nothing short of impressive so far. We’re two games in, and Square Enix will be looking to round out the trilogy with one final entry in the coming years, though the developers are not yet ready to reveal the release date.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi shared some details about the development progress for the third game. He also mentioned, much to my chagrin, that the card game introduced in Rebirth, titled Queen’s Blood, will be back in the final entry. Not only that, Hamaguchi hopes to expand on what we saw of Queen’s Blood in Rebirth and make it bigger and better.
“Queen’s Blood is a very popular and beloved mini-game,” says Hamaguchi, “And I believe a lot of people are still wanting something like that. I want to expand on Queen’s Blood so that we are enhancing it, and giving you a more powered-up version of it when you see that third installment… Queen’s Blood is still going to be available in the third installment. We just want to expand on it.”
It’s hard to imagine how much bigger Queen’s Blood can be, considering that it was featured so prominently in Rebirth. There was a whole tournament you had to take part in midway through the game, and there were so many side quests and cards related to it. I know very well that I’m in the minority here, and maybe it’s just my Triple Triad biases showing, but I was never that taken with Queen’s Blood and didn’t find it all that compelling. So knowing that it’ll be in the third game doesn’t exactly excite me, but I’m always open to having my mind changed.
Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth are now available on PC and consoles. The former also just got its Switch 2 release, which I’ll be reviewing this week.
