The Emmys are still months away, but the race has already begun. There are a lot of serious contenders for the coveted Best Drama award, including The Pitt, Slow Horses, Paradise, Task, just to name a few. And of course, my personal pick of the year, Pluribus.
According to a report from Variety, Pluribus creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan is eyeing the Best Writing and Best Directing awards as well, and is set to submit the show’s pilot (We Is Us) for consideration. The report also states that the third episode, Grenade, is up for submission, directed by Gordon Smith.
Of course, Pluribus‘ cast will likely be considered for the lead, supporting, and guest acting awards too. Seven cast members are in consideration, as listed below:
- Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka
- Karolina Wydra as Zosia
- Carlos-Manuel Vesga as Manousos
- Miriam Shor as Helen
- Jeff Hiller as Larry
- Robert Bailey Jr. as the DHL deliveryman
- Samba Schutte as Diabate
Notably, Seehorn bagged the Best Actress awards at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards for her performance in Pluribus, but the Emmys eluded her during Better Call Saul‘s six-season run. In fact, Better Call Saul has never won an Emmy if you can believe it, and I’m sure plenty of series fans are crossing their fingers for a Rhea Seehorn win this year.
The competition will be stiff, though. The Pitt has just been a consistently strong medical drama for two years in a row, and its lengthy 15-episode Season 2 run will keep it in the cultural zeitgeist leading up to the Emmys. I certainly don’t love The Pitt as much as Pluribus, but I can’t deny that I look forward to each episode every week, eager to see what sort of trouble Santos is gonna get up to next. Not to mention the fact that the performances in that show are just so strong across the board, it’s ridiculous.
Even in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category, Seehorn is up against plenty of heavy hitters, including The Diplomat‘s Keri Russell, The Gilded Age‘s Carrie Coon, and I suppose there’s a non-zero chance Zendaya could run away with it depending on her performance in Euphoria Season 3, even if that show is destined to be a dumpster fire.
I will freely admit that I am a diehard fan of Gilligan’s work and have become a Seehorn convert ever since seeing her in Better Call Saul. I have also, ridiculously, taken it as a personal insult that Better Call Saul never got its flowers at the Emmys, which is probably why the stakes feel so high this year. That, and Pluribus is genuinely the most fun and innovative and existential show I’ve seen since Saul and it deserves to win! And I will actually ask the hive for an A-bomb if it doesn’t win dammit!
Deep breaths. Anyway, I’ll go decompress by rewatching The Boys now…
