Remember how long it took The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 to come out? Yeah, me neither. But I know it certainly felt like a very long wait. Still, CD Projekt Red has stated that they plan on releasing their upcoming The Witcher trilogy within a span of six years.
During the company’s latest investors call, CEO Michal Nowakowski stated that The Witcher 4 is already in its full-scale production phase. While the team isn’t ready to disclose a release date yet (and we know it’s certainly not coming out in 2026 or making an appearance at this year’s The Game Awards), Nowakowski went on to confirm that the team plans on releasing the full trilogy within a six-year period.
“In a way, yes, I do believe that further games should be delivered in a shorter period of time – as we had stated before, our plan still is to launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period, so yes, that would mean we would plan to have a shorter development time between TW4 and TW5, between TW5 and TW6 and so on,” Nowakowski said during the call.
CD Projekt Red has been working with UE5 for years at this point (and are also currently using it for a remake of The Witcher), and Nowakowski also mentioned that the team was pleased with how things were developing and learning how to make it work for a “huge open-world game”.
That being said, releasing a trilogy of games does sound a little too ambitious to me, especially in this day and age. The Witcher 3 went through three rounds of delays while Cyberpunk 2077 had four delays, so it almost seems like a given that any of the new Witcher games would inevitably be subject to some sort of delay too, making it impossible to stick within the six-year schedule.
The Witcher 4 is currently in development and does not have a set release date yet.
